Changing Seasons

From Ian Toone, New Life Church Derby

As I write, it is raining outside. Is this a sign that one of the hottest summers on record is coming to an end? Is the crispness of autumn beginning to stir in the air?

As we enter a change of season, long, unhurried days give way to early mornings and new routines. Children step into classrooms once again, and families adjust to the rhythm of school schedules and busy evenings. These transitions can feel both exciting and overwhelming, but they also offer us a fresh reminder of God’s steady presence in every season of life.

The writer of the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes reminds us that change is woven into the fabric of creation: ‘For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven.’ (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

Just as leaves will soon turn from green to gold, so too our lives are marked by rhythms and transitions. God, in His wisdom, has designed each season with purpose. Summer’s rest gives way to autumn’s renewal, and both have their place in His plan.

For children, the start of a school year is a time for new opportunities – new friends and challenges. For parents and carers, it is a time of letting go a little more, entrusting our children to the care of teachers and, most importantly, to the loving hand of God. These moments call us to prayer – asking God to guide young hearts, to grant wisdom and patience to teachers, and to give families strength for the busyness ahead.

This season also calls us to trust. Just as the farmer trusts that the seeds planted in spring will yield fruit in the harvest, so we trust that the seeds of faith, love and learning being planted now will grow in due time. God is faithful to complete the good work He begins.

As summer comes to a close, may we not cling to what is passing but embrace what lies ahead.

Let us look with hope to this new season, knowing that God is unchanging, even as everything around us shifts. He walks with us into classrooms, workplaces and kitchens alike.

Let’s give thanks to God for the gift of changing seasons and the fresh beginnings they bring. May we trust Him in every season, knowing that He continues to care for us.
