Retreat Reflection

Birds cry out to each other East group to west group From their trees and branches Dragonfly flies by me Hovers over the water lilies Goldfish in the pond Motionless, still A plane high overhead Travels unknown Sounds of running water Black cat treads slowly Through long grass Glancing at me in its stealth Following the path once again, it’s gone Crows swirl high above Calling out in signals and code Has time stood still here In this lush valley Nothing changed in hundreds of years Sun still sunning, shining bright Clouds still afloat across the vast sky Choosing to play hide and seek with the sun As old as the hills Solid and secure, unmovable, reliable Patchwork patterns of grass Chenille moss and heathers Hedges that border, providing security for life Rocks as old as time Planted firmly, deeply rooted to earths core A cars tyres on the gravel Bring me back to now Here, present in this age that I’m in Modern times, but each generation Has its view of modern Until it doesn’t, when it realises There’s nothing new under this sun
