Jane’s Date & Honey Bars

This is always a popular recipe, it’s been in my collection since it was passed to me by my friend Jane nearly 40 years ago. Hence the nearly outdated weights and measures. I’ll try to remember to add a photo the next time I make them!


  • 6 oz stoned dates
  • chopped
  • 3 Tbsp thick honey
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 Tsp plain flour
  • Place in pan with 8 Tbsp water, bring slowly to boil. Cook gently 3-4 min. Cool
  • Crumble mix:
  • Mix together
  • 4 oz SR flour
  • 4 oz demerara
  • 5 oz oats
  • 6 oz melted marg
  1. Spread half crumble mix over base of a 7″ tin, press down
  2. Spread the date mix over
  3. Finish with remaining crumble
  4. Bake 20 min at 180C, then cool in tin 30+ min before cutting into squares or bars.
