Taking down idols

There are many levels to the current situation of angry mobs desecrating statues in our cities.

Here is one to consider. In the tearing down of statues because of what they represent (undeniable historic injustices) I wonder if there is a place for self examination. How closely do we consider the source of the food we buy, or the clothes we wear, or the electronic goods we enjoy. How many of these things are produced by people who have had a fair wage for a fair day’s work, with the other benefits that we would all expect?

Modern slavery is alive and well in our day because we balk at paying the true worth of things. We bow to the god of consumerism whilst disparaging the value system of our forebears. Are we any better?
